How To Properly Act In The Car

Etiquette...schmettiquette.  I'm not a huge fan all old time traditions unless they have some sort of useful function on modern society.  This article caught my eye today.

Who says I can't sing along to my favorite songs and no, I'm not putting my dog on the floorboard.

You know what?  As long as you're not picking your nose, driving while jabbering away on the cell or doing something else to distract you, you can do whatever you want.

Debrett’s, the leading authority on etiquette, has produced a guide to modern motoring – advising men not to be backseat drivers and women on how to get out of a car without flashing their underwear. The 47-page book promises to finally teach drivers the “right and proper way to behave behind the wheel”. Here are some highlights:

• Men should open the door for a female passenger and wait for her to get in before closing it carefully behind her. A chivalrous man will ensure that his female passenger is comfortable before the journey begins.

• He should offer to take her coat, check that her seat is adjusted and be sure that the temperature’s to her liking.”

• A true gentleman is never a backseat driver. “She’s in the driving seat.” A chivalrous passenger is as well-behaved and polite in the car as he is when he’s out and about.

• In order to be “the perfect host”, drivers are encouraged to choose only music that meets their passengers’ approval and are advised to “keep conversation light and refreshing”.

• The book also instructs women on how to get out of a car in a “ladylike” fashion. “Smooth down your skirt. Keeping your knees together, swivel your body and swing your legs outwards. “Place one foot down, keeping your knees together. Dip your head and shoulders forward and slide and glide out of the car.”

• Also, courteous drivers will refrain from singing along to their favorite tunes unless they are a “karaoke pro.”

• When behind the wheel, even the most stylish of women are warned not to drive in high heels and to keep a pair of “flat, pump-style shoes” in the vehicle.

• As far as transporting pets, ensure they do not impinge on other passengers. Dogs should be carried on blankets and should be kept on the floorboard.

There’s plenty more in the book, “Thoroughly Modern Motoring Manners from Debrett’s and Astra,” which isbe available for purchase on Amazon.
