5 Ways To Ruin Your Career

Fear of getting fired or laid off getting to you?  Avoid these self-destructive habits.

Not keeping track of your accomplishments:
Let's say your boss is deciding whether to keep you on board or not, he sits you down and asks "Why should I keep you?"  If you don't have anything tangible to prove your case, you could be putting your job in jeopardy.  Keep a running list of awards, promotions and accomplishments to showcase your achievements.

Not keeping your skill set current:  Not only keeping your skill set current, but expanding on it shows your employer you're worth their money, especially when companies are looking for ways to cut expenses.

Not delivering results: We all know that business is about accountability.  If you're not contributing to the bottom line, if you're costing money instead of making it or if you have a habit of feeling entitled just because you are putting for the effort, you could be in trouble.

Thinking you're irreplaceable:  There is no room for the 'diva' mentality in the workplace.  There are millions of people looking for work right now and chances are some of them could do your job.  As soon as you convince yourself that you are the only one that can do the job 'right', you're setting yourself up for disaster.

Losing perspective:
Those who fail to recognize their shortcomings are destined for unemployment.  Intuitive business people recognize that, despite their best attempts to do everything right, there will be roadblocks.  Acknowledging that you aren't perfect will earn you respect in the office.
