Financial Tips For Young Adults

Unfortunately, personal finance has yet to become a required subject in high school or college, which leaves many young adults clueless about money when the enter the real world.

It's time to get started by understanding a few basic pointers that will help you live a comfortable and prosperous life.

Learn self control now, not later.  If you're lucky this was a skill instilled in you by your parents when you were a kid.  If not, keep in mind that the faster you learn it the sooner you'll find it easy to keep your finances in order.  Purchasing an item on credit the minute you want it is a simple thing, but do you really want to pay interest on a pair of jeans?  If you make it a habit to put all purchases on a credit card, regardless of whether you can pay your bill in full at the end of the month, you may still be paying for those items in 10 years.  If you must keep a credit card, be sure to pay the balance in full for this reason.

Don't put your financial future in someone else's hands.
If you don't learn to manage your money, other people will find ways to (mis)manage it for you.  Intentions aren't always bad, but when your bank account is empty it doesn't make a difference why it happened.  Instead of relying on the advice of others take charge by educating yourself.

Watch where your money goes.  One of the most important things you can do is make sure your expenses aren't exceeding your income.  Do this by making a budget.  Once you've calculated what that daily cup of coffee adds up to every month, you may decide to rethink some spending habits, which can help you save more in the long run.

It's important to start and emergency fund.  Live by the mantra "pay yourself first.".  No matter how much owe in credit card debt or student loans, or how low your salary may seems, it's wise to find some amount...any amount...of money in your budget to save in an emergency fund.  This fund can really keep you out of trouble when times are tough, and it's a great way to get in the habit of saving money on a regular basis.

Guard your health.
Meeting a monthly health insurance premium may seem impossible, but think of the expense it takes to visit the emergency room for a minor injury.  Don't wait another day to shop around for the best rate.  You can also take steps to keep yourself healthy to prevent exorbitant medical bills in the future.

Finally, guard your wealth.  It took you time and effort to earn what you do, so take steps to protect it.  If you rent, get renter's insurance to protect your belongings.  Disability insurance protects your greatest asset:  the ability to earn an income.
