How To: Put Your Best Foot Forward

Tough economic times mean working even harder to go above and beyond work expectations at your job.

Rise above it:  It's best to presume good will.  This gives the other person a face-saving way to change his or her behavior.  Any diplomat will tell you that the best way to negotiate is to give people a graceful way to do what you want them to do.

Don't fight rudeness with rudeness:
Retaliating with rude behavior only doubles the amount of rudeness, it doesn't reduce it.

Stay calm: Nowadays, everyone comes out swinging, but you do need to control your temper, think civilized.

Practice restraint:
If it's something minor from a stranger, ignore rude behavior, if it's from a spouce, friend,  or coworker, address it in a clear, polite and positive way.

Teach good manners early:
When it's done, kids are less likely to become narcissitic and abusive adults.
