Bike Safety

Start summer off right while keeping safety first with these biking tips.

Try before you buy:  Take your child with you when you shop for a bike so that they can try it out.  The value of properly fitting your child outweighs the value of surprising them with a new bike.  Be sure to buy a bike that is the correct size, not one the child will be able to “grow into”.  Oversized bikes are very dangerous.

100% helmet rule:
Your child needs to wear a helmet every ride, no matter how short or how close to home.  Many accidents happen in driveways, sidewalks and bike paths, not just streets.  This rule goes for adult bikers too.  Your children learn best by observing you so set a good example.  Buy a helmet that meets the CPSC safety standard.  A helmet should be worn level on the head, not tipped forwards or backwards.  The strap should be securely fastened so you are not able to move it in any direction.  Sizing pads can help improve the fit of the helmet.

Don’t push the 2-wheeler:
Pressuring your child to ride a 2-wheeled bike before they are ready is very dangerous.  Around age 5 or 6 is usually when kids have the coordination and desire to learn to ride.  Motor skills and desire should be considered when looking to teach your child.  Avoid hand brakes and stick to foot brakes until your child is older and more experienced.
