Winterize Your Car

Keep the family safe while traveling to grandmother's house this holiday season.

Use these tips as little reminders could save you time, heartache and maybe even a little cash!

Get an oil change.
This is not the time to take a chance and procrastinate on routine maintenance.  Make sure it's the right kind of oil change.  The oil should have the right viscosity (thickness) for your vehicle at this time of year.  Oil tends to thicken up with falling temperatures, but if it's too thick it will be hard on your engine.

Examine belts and hoses.  When you have the full service done on your vehicle make sure the belts and hoses get checked for wear and tear.

Change your windshield wiper blades.
If you can't remember the last time these were changed out, it's time for new ones.  Make sure you're all set with windshield washer fluid.

Check tire presser.
Your tires have to be properly inflated to ensure you'll have the best possible traction on snowy roads.  The air pressure in your tires has more than likely dropped with the temperature, so check your owner's manual to make sure you're within the correct range.  You could also think about switching to snow tires.  They can improve your traction in areas like this that see snowy days.

Do a four-wheel drive check.
if you've got four-wheel drive, now is the time to check it.  Most drivers don't use their 4WD systems in the summer months, so it's a good idea to make sure the system engages and disengages easily before you get out on the roads.
