Dust off that grill and barbeque all summer long while keeping health in mind.
There’s nothing better than a great barbeque on a summer day. If your first thoughts are high-calorie, high-fat sausages and burgers - don't fret! Chicken, fish, vegetables and even fruit are delicious cooked on the barbeque. Barbeque can be tasty and nutritious!
Kebabs: Skewer your favorite vegetables, add a little low fat seasoning and you’re set. Peppers, mushrooms and onions can be surprisingly filling, and you don’t miss out on any of the great smoky flavors. If you can’t do without meat, opt for leaner selections like poultry, and take the skin off. More adventurous foodies may also want to try adding tofu to the dish. It’s easy to cube and takes on flavors very well.
Salmon: This fish is low in calories and saturated fat but high in protein. A whole fillet works well on the grill, and is high in important omega 3 fatty acids.
Sweet Corn: Try to add flavor to your sweet corn by grilling it instead of adding butter and salt. Pre boil it until just tender to keep it juicy and speed up cooking time, then throw it on the grill. You won’t even miss the butter!
Turkey Burger: Everyone loves a good burger, but unfortunately they aren’t in a healthy summer eating plan. Never fear, trade beef for turkey and save on calories.
Grilled Bananas: Instead of reaching for the ice cream try wrapping whole bananas in tin foil and putting them on very low heat. Leave them on for about 10 minutes, unwrap, peel and enjoy a gooey and healthy dessert alternative.
