Keep your skin safe as the days heat up.
Reapply, Reapply Reapply. You should be wearing SPF 30 or higher every day, and it’s not enough to just apply once. You should be using 1 ounce (a shot glass) every morning from head to toe. Reapply every 2 hours (or more if you are swimming or sweating). Make this a daily habit even if you’re not planning to spend hours in the sun. Short periods of sun exposure, like walking from the car to the store, can still damage your skin. Don’t let the clouds fool you either. Just because you can’t see the sun, doesn’t mean damage isn’t being done. On a cloudy day, 80 percent of the sun’s rays still penetrate through. Even in winter you should protect your ears, face and hands from rays.
Shop smart when it comes to the sunscreen you choose. It’s best to stick to trustworthy brand names. Look for “broad spectrum,” to ensure that the formula blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Choose waterproof or sweat proof formulas when appropriate. Oversized hats and sunglasses aren’t just cute accessories either. They do wonders in shielding vulnerable areas from the sun.
Just say no to tanning beds. By now you’ve probably heard of the vitamin D debate, and it is important to your health. The sun isn’t the only place you can get it though. Eat salmon, choose vitamin D fortified milk or orange juice or take a supplement. Remember, there is no safe tan. A tan is a reaction of the body to damage from the sun. You should always avoid sun exposure and get regular skin cancer screenings. If you catch skin cancer early, you’ll have a better chance to treat it successfully.
